Diet food isn’t everything. The magic of water – how to lose weight successfully.

Waistaway’s recommended diet food is low calorie, and delivers optimal nutrition and will help you to lose weight helthily but water is free for all diets.

glass of water

sip around 2 litres of water a day to maintain hydration

By reducing the number of calories in the diet food we eat we often lose weight but pay little attention to the fluids we consume, unless we are correctly losing alcohol from our allowed diet food and drink list .

Water comes bottled or from the tap, in it’s natural still form or carbonated. The one thing these have in common is that they all contain zero calories. They are the one true free diet “product”. Water is the fluid of choice for all diets.

In fact we should all, as part of a normal healthy diet, drink around 2 litres of water a day, which is around 4 pints. This volume should be sipped throughout the day, rather than drunk in fewer sittings in large amounts.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that sipping water during the day leads to a reduction in the food and therefore calories we consume. One reason for this could be the confusion of  our feeling the effects of dehydration as hunger, and since water is a large component of conventional and diet food, by eating we can partially compensate for the lack of body fluid. Eating food however doesn’t fully replace the needed fluids. This phenomenon is easily seen when you get home from work tired and “hungry” but actually often tired and dehydrated.

When following any healthy diet it is imperative that you keep suitably hydrated, especially when on a specially controlled diet food plan such as the Waistaway Sure programme(using the Lipotrim Pharmacy Programme). The quick weight loss at the start of the diet is due to the loss of large quantities of water from the body as glycogen is used up. If this water is not replaced ,dehydration can set in and give rise to symptoms such as dizziness, headache and general malaise.

One way to measure your hydration level is to check what colour your urine is. Contrary to many people’s experience your urine should be clear and colourless, and if it is concentrated or yellowy this could be a sign that you need more fluids. After you have settled into your diet, and if it is a ketone producing diet, you can purchase ketostix to test your urine.

Top 10 tips to increase your exercise levels

In a recent post, Is exercise necessary for weight-loss?, I discussed how exercise does little to help move the scales when dieting (alone exercise leads to 0.5kg per month on average), and that it is predominantly about the food and drinks we consume that determines rate of weight loss. I must re-stress the need to carry on with, and preferably increase, the amount of exercise you do because living a less sedentary lifestyle improves your long-term health, fitness levels and does play a back-ground part in weight loss and maintenance. To state again the facts, exercise does indeed increase the amount of calories used, aiding weight loss and management, but will NOT compensate for over-eating. The relative loss of calories through quite regular exercise will (for most people) not even contribute to a pound of weight loss per week.

The aim is for everyone to achieve 30 minutes of moderate exercise on at least 5 days a week, preferably more often. Joining gyms and playing football etc are difficult for most of us to afford, whether in money or time, and hard to include in our hectic daily lives, so here are my 10 top tips to help you increase the amount of exercise you do: Continue reading

Fibreclear and Fibre – what is it and why do I need it?

Fibre and Fibreclear

soluble colourless, tasteless fibre

Fibre is a complex carbohydrate which is found in all plant-based foods and an essential part of our diet whether conventional or following a healthy controlled diet to lose weight. Fruit, vegetables and grains are an important source of fibre. There are two types of fibre; soluble and insoluble.

We find it really difficult to digest fibre and so absorb very little, most passing through our digestive tract unchanged, and as it does this it absorbs huge amounts of water, giving bulk to our faeces. This bulk helps keep our bowels healthy and functioning optimally. Continue reading

Acne

Acne is a disorder of the follicles on the face, upper chest and back, usually affecting people of the ages 12 to 18 but can extend to those in their late 20s. This disorder leads to excess sebum production (which is a mixture of fatty acids, cholesterol and dead cells naturally produced to coat the skin and hair), whiteheads and blackheads. It is aggravated by stress, hormones, the climate and certain drugs (usually prescription only medication).

Is exercise necessary for weight-loss?

To put it simply: an intake of calories less than that needed for your body to function normally and maintain their weight, will result in weight loss. Exercise will aid this by “using” some of their intake of calories, but the main problem for anyone wanting to lose weight is what they see on the scales or in the mirror. Their expectation usually outstrips the reality of their calorie deficit efforts through exercise. Continue reading

Why do diets fail?

Obesity and weight gain is the symptom or outcome of dietary mismanagement over a long period of time.

Diets can only be classed as failed only if the following occur:

1 failure to lose any weight by not following in any way the plan set

2 weight gain or no weight lost through lack of understanding on what calories and food group portions you require

3 non-nutritional complete plans which are simply not healthy you must avoid. These diets fail simply because they are not safe.

Any person that has lost even a tiny amount of weight compared to that required has been “successful”, and it must be noted that weight loss doesn’t have to occur in one go (although best outcomes are often seen in those that do lose all the weight required in one attempt) but can be achieved over a step-down approach. Full diet success is when you have reached the target weight you have set, not reaching target weight is a failure to see the plan through to the end point, and failure of a diet is not measured by putting on weight afterwards.

Ketosis – what is it and why does it help dieters?

a complete weight loss service

The Waistaway Sure plan, using the Lipotrim Pharmacy Total Food Replacement Programme, harnesses a mild ketosis to allow the person to diet comfortably and with longevity. But what is Ketosis and how does it help?

Ketosis is the term given to the process when fats in the body are burnt rapidly. The breakdown of the person’s fat leads to the production of ketones, the definition of which is

organic compounds  including acetone, acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid produced normally during fat oxidation

(ref Pocket medical dictionary 15th ed Churchill Livingstone)

When you start the Sure plan you are restricting your dietary intake to only that of the meal packs provided, and intake of fluids to water, black tea and black coffee. This is so that the body is forced to revert to breaking down it’s fat reserves (the excess weight) to meet the energy requirements of that person. With the calorie intake vastly below the daily 2000Kcal levels needed, the massive calorie gap leads to rapid weight loss.

Firstly, before fat breakdown can be achieved, we must Continue reading
